Baking Eggshells for the Garden

This article will teach you how to bake eggshells for use in the garden to improve your soil and benefit your plants!

First I collect all of our spent eggshells in a big bowl. When it gets full, I prepare to bake them.

Baking eggshells helps to dry them out fully, especially the membrane inside the egg. Drying out the membrane, allows you to crush up the eggs more easily.

I bake them by placing the eggshells on a cookie sheet, and put them in the oven on low, around 250-275 degrees, for about an hour.

After I take them out of the oven, I let them cool. Then I use a wide spoon and began mashing them to break them down in size.

I then add 1 heaping TBSN of the eggshells into my pots when I plant my tomatoes, along with some epsom salts and fertilizer.

Store any extra eggshells in an airtight jar for using later in the garden!
