5 Things Friday – 3/23/18

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 3/23/18! I hope you all had a great week! Please comment with one of your favorite things that happened this week, or something that you are thankful for. 🙂 Every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. I will try to post one thing for each of these categories: Homestead Garden, Homestead Critters, Homestead Kitchen, Homesteader Entertainment and Personal a thing from my Homesteader life. These may be handy gadgets, recipe’s, quotes or moments in time. I hope you will all share some of your Friday Favorites with me as well! Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing was this new pair of Ariat work boots that I bought myself. I have been dealing with extremely bad plantar fasciitis in both feet for the last 4-5 years. It got so bad this last fall, I ended up having surgery on my right foot. I was off my feet for a month before surgery and then slowly worked my way back up to being back on my feet. Since I’ve been working in the garden, I noticed that my tendons, ligaments, muscles, what have you are still weak, and I have almost turned my ankle easily over a dozen times in the last 2 months working outside. So I decided I needed some ankle support instead of wearing my Crocs or Oofos slip ons out in the garden. These boots are a dream! So comfy! And cute to boot! Ha! So cute in fact, my FFA daughter decided she needed a pair too! So now we are twinning! If you need a good pair of garden or homestead work boots, you should check them out. Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing was again the weather! Sorry for the repeat, but it reached 70 degrees on Monday and has been gorgeous all week! OK, no, maybe it was this view while working in the garden! I got all my brassica’s planted this week, about half transplants and half by seed. I planted my peas. We made a little more progress on the Back to Eden orchard project thanks to my girl M. She also cleaned a couple more chicken coops for me.   I am slowly checking things off my March Homestead To Do List . This weekends focus will be to get the rest of the tomato and peppers started! What are you working on in the garden this weekend? Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing is my puggle girl Figgy Pudding. This puppy dog has my heart, and everyone else’s that she loves on. She loves to crawl up on your chest and give you a big hug, wrapping her paws around your neck and licking your face endlessly. She is the absolute best…

These may be handy gadgets, recipe’s, quotes or moments in time. I hope you will all share some of your Friday Favorites with me as well! Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing was the weather! It was beautiful all weekend thru Tuesday. I cleaned out a couple of chicken coops, started our Back to Eden mulching method under our apple trees, pruned the grapes and raspberries, planted fava beans and got some weeding done. You can see some of my progress in my March Homestead To Do List post. It was good to be outside working again! Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing, is this cute photo of our barn cat Otis. Otis lives in our goat shed and thinks he is a goat. They are his best friends, and he can often be seen sitting on a goat or cuddling next to one! He is a true feral cat rescue that we got from a local program called Barn Cats R US. They trap, neuter and return feral cats to a setting where they can do their good work keeping the rodent control at bay. Otis has never let us touch him, but he puts up with us doing chores around him. We love having him here…

Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening item, more seeds of course! Yes, I had to place another order, as I was figuring out what I wanted to plant for peppers and tomatoes this year, some of my favorites were almost gone. And then some other things just happened to fall into my cart as well….you know how that goes……ahem. Yes. ANYWAY. It is all about seeds here at the moment. I am hoping to get my own tomato seeds planted this weekend, and then I will start taking order for pepper and tomato starts next week from local peeps. Check out my Seed Starting 101 Series if you need some tips on how to successfully plant your seeds indoors!   Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing, is the new electric fence we have decided to put up to protect our chickens. We don’t have it yet, technically, but it is in the works. Our last ducks got eaten by what we are pretty sure are raccoons. Last year they took out quite a few of our chickens. And once…

5 Things Friday – 2/23/18

Today I am starting a new series, that I originally saw on Erica Strauss’s blog NWEdible called 5 Things Friday. Every Friday I will aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. I will try to post one thing for each of these categories: Homestead Garden, Homestead Critters, Homestead Kitchen, Homesteader Entertainment and Personal a thing from my Homesteader life. These may be handy gadgets, recipe’s, quotes or moments in time. I hope you will all share some of your Friday Favorites with me as well. Homestead Garden Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening item is this Japanese pruning saw that I learned about from Paul Gautschi in the Back to Eden gardening film (which is another favorite of mine, if you haven’t seen it, you MUST!!!!!). It works so well, pruning the fruit trees has been so easy. It cuts through like butter! And a tip from Paul, who is a master arborist, never use loppers to prune. He swears by this saw and a good pair of pruners! That is all you need. See my article How to Prune your Apple Trees on the Homestead Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter item, is our glorious eggs! The birds have really starting laying up a storm, and the pretty colors just get me every time. Unfortunately, our two olive eggers are still slacking except for the one huge double yolker that one of them laid in this photo, but I think everybody else is donating to the cause. Which means we have enough to keep our egg customers happy! Homestead Kitchen Favorite: My 5 Things Favorite Kitchen item, is something my oldest received as a wedding shower gift recently, and then I…
