5 Things Friday – 5/11/18

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 5/11/18! I hope you all had a great week!  5 Things Friday Every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. I will try to post one thing for each of these categories: Homestead Garden, Homestead Critters, Homestead Kitchen, Homesteader Entertainment and Personal a thing from my Homesteader life. These may be handy gadgets, recipe’s, quotes or moments in time. I hope you will all share some of your Friday Favorites with me as well! Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing is finally being done with all of my tomato and pepper transplanting, and having sold most of them this past week. Whew! That was a lot of work and I’m glad it is done! I’ve also just posted a great little tutorial if you need some guidance on How to Transplant Tomato Seedlings. Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing was a visit we had from my daughter’s BFF, of their new house piglet Penny. Isn’t she cute? Doesn’t my hubby look like he is just so smitten? I am thinking we may have a house pig of our own soon by the look on his face!!! Homestead Kitchen Favorite: My 5 Things Favorite Kitchen item thing this week is really NOT having to be in the kitchen much this week! DD is off at FFA State, and so it’s just me and hubby so I am taking it easy. We went out to dinner last night, and my oldest DD cooked dinner for us tonight! Homesteader Entertainment Favorite: My 5 Things Favorite entertainment thing this week…..hmmmmm. I can…

5 Things Friday – 4/27/18

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 4/27/18! I hope you all had a great week! Lack of Posts this Week I apologize for not getting any other posts up this week, but it has just been super duper busy here and I haven’t been feeling great on top of that, so things are getting behind.  I only have about a 1/4-1/3 of my 365 tomato and pepper transplants done and I thought I would be done by now! ACK! So that is taking up every spare moment right now. I hope you will have a look see at some of my other posts in the mean time such as Gardening with NO WEEDS, How to Use Eggshells in the Garden and How to get a Massive Potato Harvest from Pots. 🙂 New Posts Coming Up I do have 3 “how to” posts lined up, How to Can Tomato Sauce from Frozen Tomatoes, How to Transplant your Onion Seedlings and How to Transplant your Tomato Seedlings. But all three are super photo intensive and my usual photo editing site has been down as they prepare to launch a huge upgrade. I will have more time next week and hopefully my photo editing site will resolve their problems, so I can get them all up for you guys soon! If you have any other post ideas, feel free to share! I am always looking for ideas that will help people with their gardens! 5 Things Friday ANYWAY, every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. I will try to post one thing for each of these categories: Homestead Garden, Homestead Critters, Homestead Kitchen, Homesteader Entertainment and Personal a thing from my Homesteader life. These may be handy gadgets…

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 4/20/18! I hope you all had a great week! Every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing is finally having time to up pot all my tomatoes and peppers! Starting later today, my weekend is almost clear, and it is time to get these babies into their forever pots! Hoping to move them all into the greenhouse next week. See my previous posts about how to grow peppers and/or tomatoes by seed. Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing is that we are starting to collect eggs for hatching! Our breeding pens have been set up for a little bit more than a month now and I am so excited to get our first hatch going this year. We will be collecting eggs from our Blue Ameraucana pen, our Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Pen and also some of our Blue, Black & Splash Marans pen. We will follow that with another hatch with Olive Eggers. After trying out several incubators, this is our favorite one by far Genesis Hovabator 1588. I highly recommend it if you are just starting out with hatching your own eggs. We like it so much, we actually have two of them! So excited for fluffy little baby chicks again. 🙂 Homestead Kitchen Favorite: My 5 Things Favorite Kitchen…

5 Things Friday – 4/13/18

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 4/13/18! I hope you all had a great week! Every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing is our pair of Rainier Cherry Trees are in bloom. They are one of the reasons we bought this lot when we were shopping for a piece of land to build our home on. They frame our view of the valley and Mt Pilchuck and I love when they are in bloom! Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing is having chicks in the house again! We didn’t hatch these, they are one of my daughters’ FFA projects and we picked them up last night. They are meat birds for the livestock auction, but it is still fun to have chicks again! We love this little brooder and use it in place of a heat lamp. Homestead Kitchen Favorite: My 5 Things Favorite Kitchen item thing this week was getting my pressure canner out again and using it. It has been way too long! I pulled out a ton of frozen tomatoes from the freezer, and made a huge batch of sauce and canned it all up. Made a bunch of room in the freezer and restocked the pantry a bit too! Stay tuned for a post coming up very soon on canning…

5 Things Friday – 4/6/18

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 4/6/18! I hope you all had a great week! Every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing is this Cobra Head gardening tool. It is hands down my most favorite garden tool. It gets out those big weeds so easily, and turn it on its side, and scape the hook along the top of the soil, and it pulls out all those newly germinated weeds. Use the hook to dig your small holes for transplanting small plants. So easy to use, it is my go to tool when doing garden bed clean up. It will certainly be getting a lot of use this month as I tackle my April To Do List on the homestead. Homestead Critters Favorite:   This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing is our very small remaining flock of Blue Laced Red Wyandotte’s. We are down to just a trio for breeding. Last year raccoon’s got in several of our coops and took out a lot of our birds. We will be working on building this flock back up for sure. Wyandotte’s are a great breed for families to start with and they are the perfect bird for a homestead. They are docile, relatively quiet and dual purpose, which means they are great egg layers but…

5 Things Friday – 3/30/18

Welcome back to 5 Things Friday 3/30/18! I hope you all had a great week! Sorry for this late posting today, I have been fighting a sinus infection, and after a second night of no sleep at all due to all the coughing, I went in to urgent care this morning and got some drugs. So hopefully they kick in fast and I get back to normal quickly. Hope you and yours are all healthy…..seems everyone I know has got something going on right now. ANYWAY, please comment with one of your favorite things that happened this week, or something that you are thankful for. 🙂 Every Friday I aim to post about 5 of my favorite things that week. Homestead Gardening Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite gardening thing was finally being done with planting all the peppers and tomatoes! My seed starting rack is full, almost to the point of overflowing! I got a late start on some of these, so I hope they will do ok this year. I still need to plant a bunch of annuals, but I think I will do that using the winter sowing method if I have enough energy this weekend. Homestead Critters Favorite: This week, my 5 Things Friday favorite critter thing is our other Puggle Toby. Now that I’ve mentioned Figgy and Pi, I figure I better mention Toby, or he won’t be happy! Toby…
